Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. She suffered from an anxiety disorder that was rooted in word associations as a young teenager. Ford became fascinated by acting during her teenage years she joined the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one month, she decided that it wasn't suitable for her. Ford then applied for a place for the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. He was later to play recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford's debut on TV was an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate was seen in television programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning during the Nineties. Tate would also frequently work in theatre and eventually joined The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedy, that were added to Tate's selection in the year 1996.
